The Moray West offshore wind farm reached full power and was officially switched on by the Secretary of State for Scotland, Ian Murray, at Ocean Winds control room facility in Buckie.
The 882MW project is the second offshore wind farm to be developed and delivered by Ocean Winds in the Moray Firth with the other being their 950MW Moray East project. Their next project in the same area will be their 2GW Caledonia offshore wind farm which is currently going through the planning system.
Consisting of 60 Siemens Gamesa turbines, each delivering a capacity of 14.7MW, on large XXL monopile foundations weighing in at 2,000 tonnes of steel per substructure. The project utilised two of the ports in the Inverness and Cromarty Green Freeport during construction of the project. The Port of Nigg dealt with the turbines and the monopiles were deployed from the Port of Cromarty Firth at Invergordon.
Ian Murray said "I'm in Buckie today to officially power up Ocean Winds' Moray West offshore wind farm - which will power 1.3 million homes - half the homes in Scotland. Investments like this are living proof that Scotland and its workers are benefitting from the skilled jobs and economic growth that clean energy can bring."
