Freedom of Information

Find out about HIE's obligations under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act.

How to make a Freedom of Information request

As a Scottish public body, we comply with the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act, which came fully into force in January 2005.

The Act provides a right of access to information held by public bodies. It is enforced by the Office of the Scottish Information Commissioner who has the necessary powers to regulate compliance.

The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 requires Scottish public authorities to produce and maintain a publication scheme. Authorities are under a legal obligation to:

  • Publish the classes of information that they make routinely available
  • Tell the public how to access the information and what it might cost.

We are also legally required to produce a 'Guide to Information' for its dormant publicly owned companies. If you wish to see the 'Guide for Information' for its former local enterprise companies, see our archive below.
