In Scotland, apprenticeships play a key role in supporting the growth of the offshore wind sector by providing workers with the practical skills and qualifications needed to succeed in this rapidly evolving industry.
Apprenticeships aim to provide a mixture of on-the-job (in the workplace) and off-the-job (through day or block release at college) learning to enable people to develop the knowledge, skills and expertise required by businesses today. Designed by employers to attract new talent, tackle critical skills shortages and develop existing workforces, apprenticeships can both help people to enter the world of work and develop the skills of those already in work.

For pupils in S3 to S6. They choose this qualification as part of their subject choices and work with employers.
Foundation ApprenticeshipsPrimarily aimed at people from statutory school leaving age up to 24, although there's no upper age limit. A Modern Apprentice is employed and works towards a qualification with a college or learning provider.
Modern ApprenticeshipsFor anyone who is statutory school leaving age or above – there's no upper age limit. A Graduate Apprentice is employed and works full-time while gaining an Honours or Masters degree.

Here’s an outline of the various types of apprenticeships that are applicable to offshore wind in Scotland:
Foundation Apprenticeships are typically available to senior school students and are designed to provide an early introduction to a specific career field. These programmes can be completed alongside school studies and offer a strong foundation for progressing into more advanced apprenticeships or college and university courses.
The Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering offers young people the opportunity to explore engineering disciplines, including mechanical and electrical engineering The course develops skills and knowledge of the engineering industry including both the theoretical and practical aspects of engineering. This apprenticeship gives an insight into the engineering workplace and allows students to gain hands-on experience.
